When the Catholic Church in Ibadan Archdiocese decided to celebrate its Golden Jubilee, one of the first decisions of the Golden Jubilee Committee was to request that a history of these fifty years be written. Rev. Fr. Peter Odetoyinbo (Vicar General), was given this task, since he is a professional Church historian.
This is a history about the years of God guiding the growth of the Catholic Church in this part of Nigeria. This is Salvation History!
The growth of the Church in Ibadan can really be compared to that of a child, conception, the birth and the rapid growth to adulthood and maturity in all areas and matters. Ibadan Archdiocese grew from the planting by the Society of African Missionaries (SMA), to being an ordinary station under the vicariate of Benin Coast with Lagos as the centre, then to a Prefecture and then Diocese and now an Archdiocese. It is also amazing how the city of Ibadan itself has grown which meets up with the development of the Church and vice-versa.
So this work tries to put down the events in a more descriptive, chronological where possible and analytical way.
It is a known fact that late Rev. Fr. Patrick O'Neill had already committed to writing the history of the Church in Ibadan right from inception at the hands of the SMA especially with late Bishop Richard FInn as its first Perfect and Bishop. This work therefore, takes into cognizance his works and other works that have been written on Ibadan city and Archdiocese.
